Big Mo returns for Rocks

The SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks have lured big man Moritz Wohlers back from Germany to re-sign for the Braehead side.

The 6'8" 23 year-old from Wolfenbuttel, Germany played his first professional season for the Rocks last year under compatriot head coach Thorsten Leibenath. He now returns under player/coach Sterling Davis to join a squad that is beginning to have a familiar look.

"It's great to have Big Mo back," said Davis. "He developed into one of the League's solid big men last year and he fit in well with the rest of the guys. I know he's been working hard with the German national team this summer and I'm confident he'll just get better and stronger."

Wohlers averaged 27 minutes, 10 points and 7 rebounds per game for the Rocks in 2006/07. While his primary role is to battle under the basket with the other big men, the young German also poses a threat from outside hitting 34.58% of his three-point attempts last season.

Wohlers has high hopes for his return to Scotland:

"I really enjoyed my time in Scotland last season. I was treated very well by the Rocks, the fans and the Scottish people in general, so I'm looking forward to coming back. I also feel like we have a real chance to take the next step and win some silverware for Scotland. We were so close last year and the fans deserve it."

With 4 signings confirmed, all returning from last season, Davis hopes to ink at least 2 more top names by the end of the week. He commented:

"The team is coming together. We have four back from last year and we're close on a couple more top names. We also have 4 or 5 local guys working out with us and I'd expect 2 or 3 of them to suit up for most games. This will be an exciting team with a mix of BBL veterans and young Scottish talent."

The Rocks will first take the court in a pre-season friendly vs. USA Select on 11 September at Kelvin Hall. The BBL season tips off on 21 Sept as the Rocks travel to Sheffield Sharks. The Rocks first home game is 30 September v. Cheshire Jets at Braehead Arena. Tip-off is at 5:00pm.
