Eagles Achieve 5 Star Accreditation

The Newcastle Eagles Basketball Club, in partnership with Team Northumbria, is delighted to announce that the club is the first ever British Basketball League (BBL) club to achieve England Basketball 5-Star Accreditation with Clubmark.

The 5 Star accreditation underpins the work of the club, the university, and the Eagles Community Foundation in a partnership which is only the second organization in the country to achieve this award. The story does not end here as the Eagles Community Foundation continues to focus its strategy on building accreditation across 19 additional club sites in Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, building their star accreditations year on year.

Paul Blake, Eagles Managing Director and Chairman of Eagles Community Foundation said:

'This is another milestone reached for the organization and rubber stamps the hard work of all staff and volunteers that are part of all elements of our community basketball programme - players, coaches, table officials, referees and administrators. We are keen to make it clear that the development doesn't end here. The goal of the Eagles Community Foundation is to continue to build, support and develop club structures across the North East, each club in its own right is also climbing the accreditation ladder. Within the family there are at present 5 clubs working towards 3 Star and a further 14 clubs working towards 2 Star accreditation. We hope to break 1,000 members within this family of clubs once again this year'.

Ian Elvin, Director of University Sport comments:

'The Eagles-Team Northumbria partnership is an outstanding example of how basketball can develop successful sustainable growth and improvements to the games. The University is delighted with the award which offers continued encouragement to grow the game.'

Deirdre Hayes, Basketball Development Manager:

'This is an outstanding example of the hard work and dedication of Newcastle Eagles-Team Northumbria to build a strong club with a sustainable grassroots development programme underneath. This is just the first step in the overall development of basketball within the Northeast. We have made major strides and the club will be working even harder to continue this development far into the future.'

Terry Donovan, Chairman, England Basketball:

'The integrated network of junior clubs, a school of excellence linked to a top national league club, and elite programmes associated with further education in this country, provide a sustainable model to which other BBL and EBL clubs should aspire. It is a considerable achievement and one which all those staff and volunteers involved should be proud of.'
