Harmison bowls Durham to victory
21 April 2007
By Tom Moffat
In their first Championship match of the season, away at Worcestershire, Durham had a reasounding victory which owed much to the presence of England fast bowler Stephen Harmison.
After a great start by overseas player Michael DiVenuto, who scored 155 not out on his debut for Durham - when he batted right through the innings when Durham totaled 313, Ottis Gibson started the rot with three wickets followed by Harmison with three who bowled out the tail and Worcester only totaled 191.
Durham set a massive target by scoring 416 in the second innings - skipper Dale Benkenstein leading the way with 103 not out leaving Harmison with 5 - 63 and Thorp with 3 - 51 to wrap up a great opening victory. With eight wickets in the match by Harmison it does illustrate how much Durham miss him when he is on England duty.
Adding England players Collingwood and Plunkett to this factor, it does show how much England owe to Durham who have brought all these players right through from junior cricket to this status.
It is an amusing fact that there was also real spice to the Durham victory for on more than one occasion the scorecard read "c Mustard b Onions" - something I am sure we will often see throughout the season.
