The Holland Report – on “The Future Development of League Cricket In North East England”

For over two years Dr Grenville Holland, who has for so long been associated with the successful Durham University Cricket Club, has been researching the best way forward to bring all the leagues together to form a pyramid system that would work to every ones advantage, and at the same time be seen by The England and Wales Cricket Board – who have pumped so much money in to grass root cricket – as a workable model.

The Model that has been accepted unanimously by the leagues has the following main principles:

  1. To get the best players in the North East of England playing against each other on a regular basis to improve standards of play across the region
  2. To improve competition and make it more relevant and more rewarding to those who play cricket
  3. To improve the standard of playing facilities
  4. To improve the standards and increase the number of juniors playing cricket.

The Adopted Model – Governing Principles

“All leagues and all clubs now bear a corporate responsibility towards each other and to the system that has been adopted. Leagues are no longer free and independent agents and will increasingly become inter-dependent”

“Imbalance in an individual league must not be a barrier to promotion”

The Adopted Pyramid League Structure for North East England

Level 1
North East Premier League
(12 Clubs)
one up one down
Level 2
Durham Senior League

Level 4

This is a revolutionary development which will have a long term bearing on the playing of league cricket in to the foreseeable future. Great thanks are due to Grenville for all of his hard work and vision, and especially to the officers of all the leagues who have come to these agreements in the face of much difficulty – which was always going to be a problem when such dynamic changes to traditional league structures were to be made

Bob Jackson – DCCC Chairman
Tom Moffat – DCCC President
