Durham County Cricket Club, currently enjoying their best year ever season after winning the Friends Provident Cup at Lords in August, added another on Saturday when they won their last Pro 40 game.
To add to the tremendous excitement at Riverside as they were leaving the field as worthy victors over Glamorgan, word came through that Somerset, who were top of this league at start of play, had been beaten at Taunton by Middlesex. This, of Course, meant that Durham were not only promoted to Division One, they would go up as Champions on Pro 40 Division Two. So another trophy is going in to the trophy cabinet.
First Division Champions?
As they go in to their final four day Championship game v Kent at Canterbury this week they still stand a chance of winning this trophy as well. Eight and a half points behind leaders Lancashire and two and a half behind second Sussex (the current champions who Durham beat so convincingly last week), Durham could still win the Championship if they win well (22 poinrs are available) and the other two fail to win and gather big bonus points. An outside chance you will say but they went in to Saturday as outsiders for Somerset were expected to beat Middlesex to clinch the title.
To just go in to this final game with a reasonable, If outside, chance of being Champions is a most remarkable position for the club to be in. Cricket commentators all over the country are talking of Durham as "The Team of The Season" - and who would argue with that!
