Berwick Rangers 2 Airdrie United 0
It was always going to be difficult for Rangers following their promotion as was proved with one point after two games. Having got into the habit of winning it is always interesting to see how players react to defeat.
So it was the wee part-timers against the big full-timers. From Champions to underdogs in one easy lesson!
And what a reaction. Berwick battled from the start and took the lead with a great 25-yard volley from Kevin McLeish--I am sure his namesake Alex never scored one like that!! So 83 minutes to go!
As expected Airdrie came back into it but they found the home goalie in absolutely magnificent form. Gary O'Connor pulled off save after save which continued to hearten the outfield players who all put in a tremendous shift.
This was rewarded when Scott Gemmill raced from the half-way line and when the opposing keeper could not hold his effort he continued his run to slot home. two up after half-an-hour.
O'Connor continued to keep the visitors at bay and there was delight all round when the final whistle blew and Rangers proceeded to moved above Airdrie in the table. A performance of this nature shows what can be done and everybody's confidence will be sky high for the visit to lowly Ayr United next week.
