Ayr United 4 Berwick Rangers 0
We all knew it would be a difficult season following promotion. I feel that quite a few people do not realise the difference in the standard. Whereas last season teams may have let Rangers off the hook on occasions, against these better class sides there is very little room for mistakes or loss of concentration.
Optimism was at an all-time high after last week's home victory against full-time Airdrie so a visit to Ayr, with only one point so far and propping the table up, held few fears. Wrong!
The home side started like the proverbial "house on fire" and the pressure paid off eventually with goals by Stevenson and Moore. The second half was always going to be difficult for Rangers to get anything from the game but the game was virtually put to bed when Williams slotted in a third right on the half-time whistle.
An improved performance after the break could not prevent the homesters from going further ahead with a second goal from Moore and Ayr ran out comfortable winners.
It looks like Rangers' survival could well depend on their home form where they have to make Shieldfield a bit of a fortress where opposing teams do not fancy visiting and picking up the occasional point or three on their away trips--starting up at Peterhead next week.
