Darlington Top of the League!
21 August 2007
Attendance 1805
Accrington 0 Darlington 3
What a game and what a side! The only bad thing was the bookings, Ryan on 32 minutes and Wright on 41 minutes for us then Branch on 75 minutes for them. I wouldn’t care Wrighty had opened the scoring for us in the 26th minute so his booking knocked a bit of the shine from his performance!
Our other two goals were scored by Paul Abbott with a perfect shot in the 49th minute and a great penalty in the dying minutes of the game. Abbott, a former Preston North End striker and a recent £100,000 signing from Swansea, had a couple of speculative volleys in the first half and showed great promise.
Accrington just could seem to find their range during the 90 minutes, and Darlington took full advantage. Unfortunately for the home side, which also began the season with a win away at Wycombe, they just never got going. The local fans were becoming increasingly restless as the game progressed at Stanley's failure to shoot straight at goal. Plenty of times they got into decent positions in and around the box but on most occasions just shot wide.
Anyway, good on them, we won and Darlo are top of the league!
