Darlo Not Good Enough

Barnsley 2-1 Darlington

Captain Paul Reid drove home 13 minutes from time to earn Barnsley a tense win over Darlington and send them into the second round of the Carling Cup.

Barnsley used a 3-5-2 formation, which gave them a lot of width especially on the right were Kozluk wasn`t picked up that well by Chris Palmer, but it did leave them vulnerable at the back at times during the first half. Foster headed wide from a McBride free kick in the opening exchanges as Darlo looked to match Barnsley at every opportunity. Rohan Ricketts was pulling the strings in the Tykes midfield with some nice link up play during the first half. The game was deadlocked at 0-0 at half time though. An abject display from both sides came to life in the second half when substitute Istvan Ferenczi put the hosts in front with a diving header.

Darlo responded by bringing Micky Cummins on for Palmer with McBride moving out to the wing. Tommy Wright equalised on 70 minutes as he found the roof of the net after Souza missed his clearance.

But Reid had the final say with a neat finish from a corner late on.

Overall this was a fair performance against a side from 2 divisions higher but Barnsley looked a poor side who I think will struggle to avoid a return to League 1 this season
