Opening Nightmare for Darlo

Barnet 2 Darlington 1

It was a nightmare start for Darlington as just as they were getting over an early assault on their goal Tommy Wright picked up the quickest red card of the season by being given his marching orders on 43 seconds. The striker stuck out his elbow in a challenge with Bees defender Simon King, and referee Roy Lee did not hesitate in showing the card.

Down to ten men before the first minute is up!!!!

THEN disaster! Within another couple of minutes we are a goal down as well!! Goalkeeper Sam Russell was forced to tip over a Nicky Nicolau free-kick which caught the wind, and from the resulting corner Dean Sinclair scored.

But we made a professional re-bound and fought like tigers and the loss of the one man seemed not to be noticed. The lads were strong and played hard, so hard in fact that we were amazingly back on level terms in 22 minutes when an Evan Horwood free-kick was headed home by David Wheater. It was the defender's first goal for Darlington and his last as he returns to Middlesbrough following a short-term loan.

But Barnet were always going to have the upper hand while they had their one-man advantage and the rest of the first half had them going close on more than one occasion.

In fact there numerical superiority was confirmed when with a Nicky Bailey set-piece seven minutes after the break; Liam Hatch was on hand to tap home for what proved to be the winning goal.
