Barnet spoil the party - AGAIN!

Barnet 2 Hartlepool 1

It was sods law really. The last team to beat Hartlepool was Barnet on November 4th. Since that match Pools had a 24 match unbeaten run.

However,Barnet midfielder Jason Puncheon wanted to spoil the party and through what has to be admitted as great football took the ball past two defenders and with a powerful left-foot drive from 20 yards that left the keeper with no chance, secured the win for the home side.

The goal revealed a sad case in Puncheon who decided to celebrate in front of Pool boss Danny Wilson, having a point to prove as Wilson had released him when they were at Milton Keynes together. However, Puncheon was shown to be wrong as Barnet boss Paul Fairclough apologised to Wilson and indicated that Puncheon would be doing the same.

Barnet had much the better of the first-half and took the lead in the fourth minute. Liam Hatch found Puncheon on the left and his cross was met by Hatch at the far post into the path of Adam Birchall who poked the goal from a yard out.

Hartlepool thought they should have had a penalty in the 33rd minute when James Brown went down under a challenge from Paul Warhurst, but the ref held back.

It looked like Hartlepool would get the draw when Eifion Williams held off three defenders to stick the ball home, helped it must be said by a minor deflection.

However on 81 minutes, Puncheon scored that winner to spoil the party and give the game to Barnet.
