Johnston’s paint trophy first round
4th September 2007
Chesterfield 1 Hartlepool 3
On form duo David Foley and James Brown both scored for Pools this evening as they saw off Chesterfield in the first round of the Johnston’s paint trophy northern round.
Pools made 5 changes to the starting line up Joel Porter coming in for Ian Moore, Ali Gibb back from his suspension, Ben Clarke returning to the starting line up and Matty Robson back on the left wing. Danny Wilson had stated before the match that he intended to change things and give players an opportunity to show what they could do and the game was dominated for large parts by pools despite Chesterfield having the best chances early on in the match. It is very pleasing to see such a strong squad both on the pitch and on the bench this season with all areas of the pitch now having competition for places.
Pools were forced to make an early change with Matty Robson going off with a groin injury and being replaced by David Foley. Chesterfields big forward Rooney had the best chances early on with three very good attempts at goal. The first two were blocked by Jan Budtz forcing powerful shots out for corners and the third blocked by Micky Nelson for Pools.
Pools domination began after David Foley scored from a pass by Richie Barker on 34 minutes. Porter and Foley had more chances in the first half but Chesterfield defender Roche blocked chances and the score remained 0 - 1 at half time. The second half saw Chesterfield nearly equalise had Goodwin Antwi had not cleared off the line but instead as happened on Saturday Pools went straight down the other end and forced a corner. Ritchie Humphries played this short to James Brown who did his usual twisting and dribbling round defenders before chipping the ball over the goalkeeper. It appeared to be going out but dipped at the right time inside the back post and into the back of the net. 0 - 2
Ritchie Humphries nearly made it 3 when his powerful free kick passed through Chesterfield’s wall and only just went wide of the near post. The third goal for Pools came in 59 minutes when substitute Michael Mackay (who was looking very lively since being introduced) did some good work down the line and pass a perfect cross for James Brown to tap home his second of the match. 0 - 3 Chesterfield had a wonderful chance to pull a goal back when they were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and substitute Law stepped up and beat the wall and Budtz only to see his efforts bounce off the woodwork and back into play. Minutes later though Law passed the ball to Wayne Allison who turned and managed to beat Budtz and pull one back for Chesterfield.
Pools held the ball well to count down the clock and Chesterfield did not get a touch on the ball for over 30 passes at one point. Pools thoroughly deserved the win this evening and now can look forward to Leeds on Saturday.
