Hartlepool 3 Macclesfield 2
Hartlepool moved to the top of the League with a 3-2 win over Macclesfield Town at the Victoria Ground on Tuesday night. Other results went so well that Pools are now three points clear of second placed Walsall and six points ahead of third placed Swindon. Even Lincoln, the forth placed team that could reach Pools were beaten, hammered 4-1 at home by Hereford.
So Pools not only go top but are firmly there. A run of seventeen games without defeat has lead to these dizzy heights.
Pools were coasting along with a hour gone but ended up being lucky to take all three points when three minutes from time when Macclesfield skipper David Morley deflected the ball into his own net.
Pools took the lead on 26 minutes. Williams did well to make space for himself on the left before curling over a cross to the far post, where James Brown looped his header into the far corner over stranded keeper Lee. Macclesfield didn’t panics and although they had to defend most of the first half, they looked dangerous on the counter attack.
In the second half Pools doubled their lead, Sweeney racing clear on the left and crossing low for Richie Barker to force in a close-range finish.
However this made the embattled Macclesfield team fight hard and after 65 minutes they got the goal that they really deserved. Their first corner of the match was not cleared properly and the ball was played into the path of Justin Hadfield, who hit the net with a screamer from 25 yards.
The visitors were then level on 70 minutes after their second corner wasn't cleared and John Miles blasted a shot through the crowd, the referee ruling it had crossed the line before being cleared.
But Hartlepool won the game and extended their unbeaten run to 17 games when three minutes from time Macclesfield skipper David Morley deflected the ball into his own net.
