Everton 2 Middlesbrough 0

Oh how different it could have been. I have seen Everton in their previous two games and it has not been impressive so, had 'Boro taken one or more of three great first half chances, then the pressure would have been on the home side.

But the fact is that they didn't! Boateng knocked a chance wide, O'Neill scuffed a shot at the goalkeeper when in a very handy position and Dong-Gook Lee smashed a header against the bar from a few yards when, in all fairness, he should have done better. To make matters worse, in the meantime, Lescott had headed home after some scruffy defending of a corner. So instead of being in the driving seat, it was now again an uphill struggle.

In a fairly even second period the game was settled by a goal from little Steven Pienaar, although much of the credit has to go to Arteta, whose skill throughout was a pleasure to behold. So with a difficult match away to Man. City pending, points are at a premium and how 'Boro must be regretting those missed chances.
