Liverpool 3 Middlesbrough 2
Anfield is never an easy place to go but with Middlesbrough on a bit of a run and Liverpool not at their most confident, could this be as good a time as any to visit? Indeed it could have been until gift-wrapped goals were given away.
It all started so well with Tuncay being left totally unmarked from a Downing free-kick. His connection was so bad that Reina was left flat-footed as the ball stuttered home. All was going well until a ridiculous attempt by Arca to head back to Schwarzer left Torres in the clear and he did what he does best to equalise.
A minute later and the same player rifled home a second and it was back to comic cuts for the third when, for some obscure reason, Schwarzer decided to charge out to a through ball, only succeeded in colliding with Wheater and that man Torres needed no second invitation and the ball was duly stuck into the empty net.
Downing did get one back to offer a vague hope but Liverpool held on as Aliadiere was sent off for raising his hands to Mascherano who appeared to initiate the trouble by grabbing the Frenchman's nose!
But for those silly mistakes it could have been a good day for the 'Boro whose overall performance still beckons well for the remainder of the season.
