MARATHON MEN – Broms sent West!
Tuesday, 27th February, 2007
Attendance : 24,925
West Brom 1 Middlesbrough 1 (a.e.t.)
Boro win 5-4 on pens
When it comes to cup-ties you can never say that Boro do not give you value for money! In this season's F.A. Cup alone they had three replays, two bouts of extra-time and two of the dreaded penalty shoot-outs.
Tony Mowbray is looking like a top manager of the future as he follows his great work in Scotland with Hibs by turning his West Bromwich side into a fine attacking team.
Right from the first minute it was The Baggies who were on top with Jones-in for the injured Schwarzer- making a couple of early saves. However constant pressure eventually paid off in the 26th minute when Carter took a chance from distance and although it was not the best hit or best placed shot ever seen, for some reason Jones remained rooted to the spot and ‘Boro were one down.
West Brom continued to press but were unable to increase their lead before the half-time break.
Boro came a bit more into the game in the second period but it still came as a surprise when the in-form Viduka sent a deflected effort past Kiely to equalise. The resultant celebrations showed just what the F.A. Cup means to them.
Still there was danger and Jones saved the day by blocking an Ellington "swerver". Se here we go, extra-time again!
Although Ellington was sent off early in the extra period when he left his foot in on Stu Parnaby, "Boro failed to take advantage and so it was to penalties, not for the first time this season. Although recent signing Lee Dong-Gook hit the post with his effort, Clement immediately missed so it was back to all-square. Sudden death and Boateng slotted home followed by the unfortunate MacDonald failing to hit the target.
What bets another marathon in the next round!
