POINT TAKEN?
04 November 2007
It was difficult to predict how this game might go with the stuttering 'Boro playing against the under-achievers of the season so far. But with a new gaffer in Juande Ramos, would they now begin to display their undisputed talent or would this be the 'Boro's big chance to shine?
Well, what actually happened was "not a lot". It was a poor game with no sparkle from either side probably not helped by Ramos's strange (or was it brave?) decision to start with both Keane and Berbatov on the bench.
What little talent came to the surface was from the chosen front two for the visitors, Bent and Defoe and it was Bent who opened the scoring when he was given far too much room to shoot past Schwarzer at his near post. This may give a needed confidence boost to the man who has become universally known as "The man who cost more than Thierry Henry"!!
There looked to be only one winner as Spurs remained on top and it was difficult to see where an equaliser would come from. Well, it did and from an unexpected source, but what a goal it was! Malbranque failed to reach the ball as it rolled slowly across the pitch some 25 yards out with no apparent danger when Luke Young suddenly arrived on the scene to smash a magnificent strike like an arrow into the top corner.
A sensational goal in a less than sensational contest.
