The Other 'Boro!
14 January 2008
Middlesbrough 1 Liverpool 1
Having beaten Arsenal at home amid some distinctly medicre performances, there was hope that they could come up with the goods again against another "Top Four" team.
And they did, although this time they "only" got a draw!
Showing good spirit and looking defensively sound they more than held their own with Liverpool's only proper effort on goal coming from Gerrard and being well saved by Schwarzer. At the other end, the Liverpool defence was looking far from convincing with Hyypia's lack of pace prominent. It was no real surprise that, with Liverpool's defence all over the place, Boateng scored the opener from close range.
It could almost have been all over if Downing's shot had gone in instead of smacking off the post. Credit to Reina who got the faintest of touches on the shot.
Another win was on the cards until the talented Torres turned and, despite stumbling, regained his composure to send a "beauty" past Schwarzer.
This result leaves Liverpool well behind the others at the top and will continue the speculation that a change of boss is on the cards, whilst it is a nice point for 'Boro but they really do have to build on it and get results against the others in the bottom half.
