Was It Really That Bad?
18 February 2008
Sheffield United 0 Middlesbrough 0
I watched this match on telly and really quite enjoyed it. Here we had two teams doing their utmost to win the game and get into the draw for the quarter finals. I have watched more skillful teams but could not question the desire.
So I listened with interest to the panel of "experts" and they slaughtered the match to the point that, in their opinion, it was basically a total non-event. Yes, football is all about opinion but come on, it was never as bad as they wished us to believe. Do they expect to see Man U and Arsenal types every time they watch a match?!
Anyway, Sheffield United were up for it, new manager and all that so it was up to 'Boro to weather the early storm and this they did. As expected they then had a decent spell of pressure with the mobile Aliadiere ready and willing and the not so mobile Mido showing occasional touches of class.
Schwarzer saved well from a Kilgannon volley and 'Boro's best effort of the day was a beautifully struck volley from Downing which flew just wide with the keeper looking on helplessly.
Another highlight was when the aforementioned Mido defied his extra pounds to send an acrobatic overhead effort on target, only to be tipped over by Kenny. Loads of effort ended with both clubs in the hat for the next round and all to play for in the replay.
