Welcome Home, Mr. Riggott...
Middlesbrough 2 Portsmouth 0
5 May 2008
As it turned out, they would have been safe anyway, but at the outset it was a game that 'Boro had to win and win they did---against a very poor Portsmouth side who aided and abetted the home side by appearing to have a trip to Wembley already on their mind!
Gareth Southgate really pulled a rabbit out of the hat by recalling Chris Riggott from his loan spell at high-flying Stoke because it was he who got high above the far too casual Distain to power home the opener.
The second was another header, this time from Tuncay who also took advantage of the sluggish (to say the least!) Distain.
So guaranteed safety but there must be more to life than fighting for survival.
Let's hope for better next campaign.
