Michael Owen's Goals returned at last as his 57th minute effort set us on the way to victory over Barnsley and a place in the Third Round of the Carling Cup. Owen's goale came on the eve of the second anniversary of his joining the club and was his first at the Gallowgate End. It was December 17th 2005 at West Ham when he scored his last competitive goal and ended a 266 minute scoreless spell.
As expected, Sam Allardyce handed a debut to Jose Enrique and gave Claudio Cacapa his first start, while Shay Given and Emre were recalled, along with Nolberto Solano. The two new boys were impressive.
Half time it was goalless but efforts from Owen in the 15th minute, N'Zogbia, who had a first time effort blocked minutes after 42 minutes and a first time volley from Shola proved the magpies were being serious.
Five minutes into the second half Nicky Butt replaced Emre, wqqho had not had a good game, and within five minutes we had taken the lead. Owen finally made his mark when Ameobi slotted a ball through for the striker to run onto and fire under the 'keeper, who got a touch but was unable to stop the shot.
Barnsley struck an upright in the 63rd minute, Given a mere spectator as a shot from the right hit the inside of the post and Butt shot wide after Ameobi had played him in.
Late in the game Owen came off for Martins and within three minutes the Nigerian doubled the lead when he took down a Solano cross and acrobatically scored with the Barnsley defenders appealing for what looked like a valid handball claim.
Next round here we come.
