Better, but it had to be!!
18 March 2008
Birmingham City 1 Newcastle United 1
We shouldn't really be celebrating coming back from Birmingham with a point but the situation is such that we will gladly take it!
Things were no better in the first half and it was no real surprise when Brum went ahead through the talented McFadden. He got on to the wrong side of Faye far too easily and simply rolled the ball home past Harper.
On the bright side we did not collapse and lose another as has been the case recently. Instead we re-grouped at half time and took the game to the home side in the second half with Owen and Martins playing off Viduka in an attacking formation. Michael Owen could have scored but the ball hit their keeper Taylor smack on the face so it looked like it was going to be one of these days--again!
But we kept plugging away and Martins headed into the area from a tremendous leap, then got on to the loose ball and his shot was stopped by the keeper but it was Owen who reacted quicker than the three defenders surrounding him to slip the ball home with the sole of his boot.
Newcastle remained on top, despite a strange substitution when Martins was brought off although he was working hard and causing a lot of problems. How dare I question King Kev!!
Anyway, a bit of a boost and now for the first of several ultra-vital games at home to Fulham. A good victory and that light at the end of that tunnel might just be a little bit brighter!
