Better, but not better enough!!

Blackburn Rovers 3 Newcastle United 1

We went into this game with more hassle behind the scenes. Joey Barton was calling the Toon supporters "vicious". Do the words "pot" and "kettle" spring to mind!?

Anyway the crowd was fantastic and the performance was "better". Are we supposed to be impressed? The previous performances were an absolute disgrace so I would like to think it would be better, and a lot better at that!

Blackburn had suffered at the hands of Villa in midweek and started off tentatively whilst The Toon had their negative heads on again. Result--an absolutely shocking first half.

A goal was neede to give the game some sort of impetus and, a bit surprisingly, it came from the visitors. Martins took advantage of some poor marking from a free-kick to steal in and head home the opener. Could we go on and get a second or would we invite Blackburn to attack us and try to hang on? All I can say is that it is difficult to hang on for 43 minutes plus!

A bit of class was due to show through and, unfortunately for us, it came from Bentley who hit a perfect free-kick into the top corner and than struck home a fine effort from the edge of the box. From one up to one down--just like that!

Chances were missed at both ends but it was Blackburn who held the upper hand towards the end of the game and the final nail was hammered in by the talented Tugay who side-footed neatly past Given just on the final whistle to give the score-line a more emphatic look.

Stating the obvious, one point in 15 is not good enough and, with the visit of the fabulous Arsenal side on Wednesday, we need to put in not just a better performance but a much, much improved one!
