Clean sheet Toon!
6 August 2007
Well the Toon followed up their 2-0 win against Juventus with another win, this time by 1-0, against another top Italian side, Sampdoria.
I am an attacking man and I always feel that when we are at home we have to start with momentum and let the visiting team know that we mean business.
However, isn't it nice to keep a couple of clean sheets against quality opposition. It hasn't been our forte of late, has it!? Long may it continue!
You cannot always read too much into pre-season but it was good to see Viduka and Smith start the match. Viduka is strong and has great feey for a big fella whilst Smith, who will be delighted to have scored the winner, is such a strong character that he cannot fail to be liked by the faithful. He is sometimes over aggressive and it would be great if this could be channelled but it is his nature and I for one will be totally happy to see the type of aggression that can also give a boost to some of the other players.
It looks like Geremi has settled in and he will be a good, steadying influence but the player I am really looking forward to seeing this season is Charles N'Zogbia. He had a great start to his career and then lost his way a bit, even flinging in the occasional tantrum. Big Sam is already showing his man-management skills and it looks like he will get young Charles back to his original form and that will be a delight to see.
One last thing, I know he is injured but when we are all discussing permutations for next season, a player who is scarcely mentioned is Damien Duff. Can he show his true form next season?
