Lucky To Get Nil !!!

Liverpool 3 Newcastle United 0

We could kid ourselves and say that if we had not lost a crazy goal towards the end of the first and gone in at half-time 0-0 we had a chance. But that would be optimism to the Nth degree! It was merely a matter of time before Liverpool scored and, to make matters worse, they then got a second before the break so it was game over.

Apart from an early Faye header from a corner there was never any likelihood of us scoring to the point that it was the question of "How many?" would we lose. But for Stevie Harper it could have been even more disastrous.

Somehow we held out for 40 minutes plus until we lost one of the unluckiest goals you could ever imagine. Enrique was clearing the ball, Pennant jumped and, incredibly, the ball hit him, looped up and over Harper into the net.

If that goal was unlucky then the second was quite brilliant. After an interchange between Gerard and Torres, the former volleyed a magnificent pass to the latter who had continued his run. Torres then showed the talent of a natural goal scorer by allowing the ball to run past Harper before slotting home.

It could have been so many more in the second half but, in the end, there was only one more strike. In a bit of role reversal it was Torres who slotted the perfect through ball to Gerrard who flicked it nonchalantly over the despairing Harper.

Amazingly Reading and now Wigan have moved above us whist others are gradually sneaking up behind us so the game against Birmingham next Monday takes on massive proportions and we have to look at the three home games against Reading, Fulham and Sunderland to pick up the necessary points for survival.

One thing is sure, on current form, nothing can be taken for granted.
