Million Miles Away....

Everton 3 Newcastle United 1

12 May 2008

Well, we hoped to finish the season in style and go through the summer waiting anxiously for next season… and success!! But it was not to be, thoroughly outplayed and very fortunate not to lose by more.

Everton, one of my former teams, did play exceptionally well, but they were made to look better than they actually are by the mediocrity of the opposition. Kevin has done well to get something going this season but the second half against Chelsea and this match against fifth placed Everton just served to remind us that we are a million miles away from challenging for anything. It is going to be an interesting summer seeing who comes and who goes.

Newcastle were poor at the back with Yakubu giving Taylor a torrid time, proving that he still has an awful lot to learn. The first goal was so simple with a free-kick landing on Yakubu's head in so much space that it was an easy finish. Everton continued to totally outplay The Toon and it was astounding that it was only 1-0 at the break.

As I have said before, no matter how much a team is on top, when there is only one goal in it, there is always a chance and, quite amazingly, straight from the kick off, N'Zogbia showed great skill to weave his way into the box forcing a tackle from Yobo, who brought him down. Penalty!

As per Sunderland, Michael Owen's penalty was far from convincing but, again, it ended up in the net. Could this be a miraculous comeback? Sadly, no!

Everton continued to play some good stuff and it was no surprise when Lescott neatly side footed home and Yakubu clinched it with a penalty following a foul on Osman.

Well, a poor finish to the season and a lot of hard work required during the close season to give us any sort of hope for next season. Again!!
