Newcastle owe(n) us next season
Monday April 30th 2007
Attendance: 24,109
Reading 1 Newcastle 0
It is a sad indictment on The Toon that one of the reasons I wanted to see this game was because I admire the way Reading have gone about their business since coming into The Premiership. They decided to play good, attacking football. None of this kick it as far as you can and fight for it, work rate being all that matters and "sweating blood"--What does that mean?! And it has worked as they lie in a European slot.
Just briefly I thought Newcastle had eventually made the decision to do the same because the match started openly with both teams looking to attack. Oh and, by the way, Michael Owen made a start after more than 300 days on the sidelines. I felt really sorry for him when he sustained his injury because he only passed the ball ten yards, was not even tackled and his whole knee collapsed.
It did not take him long to show what we have been missing. In the very first minute he made a trade-mark run and just missed Emre's cross. Then he finished in his usual clinical style after seven minutes only to be ruled fractionally off-side. A major bonus was that he played the whole ninety minutes so hopefully he can lift us all for the remaining two games and I am sure a couple of goals would do his confidence a power of good.
As for the game, after the aforementioned bright start we fell back into our old habits and started playing too deeply and this allowed Reading to take over in the second half. A good ball in from the impressive Seol was neatly dummied by former Sunderland man Oster. Solano had over-covered allowing Kitson time and space to control and finish well.
This was the only goal of the game, although Martins did miss a reasonable chance with his head.
All in all another poor night's work and we can only hope that Michael can perk us up for the last two games.

I think the website is cool but why are there no food adverts on it!!. I also think that there should be more details in the coverage of the game and also some info on how to get to games, train and bus times etc, maybe even a map showing the shortest routes, say to Edinburgh or London with places you can stop off to eat (pies?) and drink. Keep up the good work. The pie man
