Newcastle Scoused!
26 November 2007
Newcastle United 0 Liverpool 3 (But could have been 7 !!!)
First of a North-East v Merseyside double bill filled, as ever, with hope and a little bit of expectation. Liverpool are having problems behind the scenes, Gerrard will have an England hangover.
WRONG!!
I cannot remember a home team ever being totally and utterly outplayed by a visiting team as The Toon were here.
We start off with three at the back which straight away shows negativity and a fear of their front two, Torres and Kuyt. Surely Newcastle should be playing the way that suits them and not pampering to the opposition by playing an alien system.
Anyway it didn't work and we did not have a shot at goal never mind a decent chance throughout whereas Liverpool were superior in every department. They had more skill, more knowhow, more pace, more confidence in each other. They also had Gerrard who put the England fiasco well and truly behind him with a great display in all the space that was afforded him by our so-called midfield players. The highlight of his performance was a stunning 30 yard drive into the top corner in the 28th minute. How it remained at 1-0 till half-time I just do not know. Torres, who looks a magnificent player, showed all the skills in the world but, fortunately for us, his finishing was just a fraction out, otherwise he could have been heading back to Liverpool with a couple of match balls!!!
The second half was quite simply more of the same, with Kuyt deflecting in a poorly defended corner immediately after the break thus completely doing away with any forlorn hope that even the most optimistic of Geordies would have struggled to have! The negativity continued in the substitutions, Barton for Emre and Milner for N'Zogbia--damage limitation?!?!--whilst Liverpool continued to have a lovely day out. Babel combined with Gerrard to score a fine third and it was backs to the wall with amazingly no additions to the score-sheet.
Where from here?
Well it is off to high-flying Blackburn and then a visit from the fantastic Arsenal so, unfortunately, we are living in continued fear and that should never be a Geordie outlook.
Sad, very sad.
