Pompey pulverise Toon
Saturday 14th April 2007
Attendance: 20,165
Portsmouth 2 Newcastle 1
After the away win at Sheffield United we were looking for a run of successes before the end of the season. Keep looking! Surely we should be going to places like Portsmouth and putting in some kind of performance that might win us the game!
But, no. Poor performances throughout the team, silly mistakes (as ever!!) meant that little Portsmouth carried on their quest for Europe while our mediocrity was there for all to see.
As early as the seventh minute Stephen Taylor was caught out and Benjani, who’s finishing has been questioned, slotted neatly home past Harper. Uphill struggle again!
Kanu was causing so many problems that Craig Moore was dragged off after only half-an-hour to be replaced by Onyewu who fared only marginally better. In fact Kanu hit the bar and had two efforts saved, so to be only one down at the interval was really quite astounding. In fact there was nearly an equaliser when Martins, whose efforts throughout the first half could not be questioned, had an effort cleared off the line, so it could have been one one.
However, one bit of good news for the second half; Andy Carroll was brought on and he did more than enough to stake a strong claim to be in the starting line-up for the visit of Chelsea.
But it was all over by the 57th minute when Matthew Taylor cracked the ball home from some 30 yards. What a season this lad is having. What are the chances of him coming first, second and third in the goal of the season contest!? And, should he not be in the England squad?
We did get a penalty after Milner was felled which Emre stuck home but for us to get anything from this game would have been a miscarriage of justice.
Where do we go from here?
Haven’t I said that before?
