Toon County’d Out
19 September 2007
Derby County 1 Newcastle 0
Well it wasn't a pretty sight! Don't tell me we are going to go back to the "giving the big teams a good game" and giving poor performances against the so-called "lesser teams". It was all going to be so easy, playing against bottom of the league, Michael Owen scoring in every game, undefeated so far. No problem.
How wrong could we be. Derby showed more fight, more will to win. In some ways it is acceptable to lose to a more talented side but when you lose to a less talented outfit principally because they want it more, then questions have to be asked.
When you lose goals the tendency is to look at poor defending or somebody not doing their job properly. In the case of the winning goal here you could look at it and say we had three defenders who backed off too much giving Kenny Miller too much space but, let's give credit where it is due. He repositioned his body well and struck the ball beautifully into the top corner. had a Toon player scored a similar goal we would be raving about it!
One last point, is Owen injured or was he just substituted. We will wait to see the team sheet on Sunday and find out then.
