'Toon put Bolton the Door!
12 August 2007
Bolton 1 Newcastle 3
We were all waiting with baited breathe to see how the season would start. Like me I am sure that you knew things would get better, if only because they had to since they were so bad at the end of last season - but how much better?
Well, it is a great start and just a pity that we do not play midweek against Arsenal because that would have been a real tester. Maybe we are going to get a bit of luck as well!
Like Sam I am a great believer in getting a left footed player to whip the ball in from the right and vice-versa from the left. So when N'Zogbia did just this from a free-kick and we attacked the ball properly the Bolton rear-guard were under pressure to such a degree that the ball went straight through and into the corner of the net. Rozehnal missed the ball by a mere fraction and, in the old days, when there was only one camera, I would have been inclined to stick my hand up and claim it!!
Now to the left and, this time in open play, Milner whips in a great ball with his right - again pressure on the defence. Loose ball breaks to Martins and he cracks a magnificent overhead kick into the old onion bag. Brilliant!
Great athleticism and just to further let us know how agile he is, he goes into a double-somersault the likes of which if you or I tried it we would still be in the R.V.I.!!
Could it get any better. Yes! A neat ball through to Martins whose pace gets it to him first. He decides to have a slap at goal and then this little bit of luck when the ball catches Faye, Jaaskaleinen has already made his move and the ball bounces gently into the middle of the net.
O.K. Bolton get one back in the second half when Anelka makes a fantastic run and finishes superbly and Speed brings a great stop from Harper but, all in all, we could not ask for any more.
Playing more of a 4-3-3 system everybody appeared to know their role and, for certain players, this style of play will suit them down to the ground.
With no out and out winger in front of him N'Zogbia could be a revelation and hopefully it will suit Stephen Carr as well.
Top of the league but we are not to get carried away with it all!!
