Unlucky? Yes!
4 March 2008
Newcastle United 0 Blackburn 1
"Unlucky" is usually a poor excuse after a dodgy display but, in this instance, it is actually very accurate. This is certainly the best recent performance by Newcastle who made numerous chances and, on any other day, would have run out comfortable winners against a very average Blackburn. In the end we did not even get a point because, in our quest for a late winner from a corner, we left ourselves wide open at the back when Blackburn broke away with sub Derbyshire made the most of Bentley's pass and slotting neatly home to gain three most undeserved points.
Michael Owen showed all of his striker's instincts to get into three great positions but, unusually for a man of his talent, he failed to finish, mainly due to fine goalkeeping by Friedel. But don't blame Michael. He got into the positions and if he continues to do this, he will finish plenty!
Whilst this was a decent performance there are still a lot of question marks.
Is Joey Barton in the right frame of mind to play at this level?
Can we give Taylor a rest to regain his confidence?
How long can we persevere with Alan Smith?
When will Damien Duff show his true form?
Why didn't N'Zogbia start the match?
These and many more questions have to be answered and I can think of nobody better in the current situation to do this better than wor Kevin!
