Newcastle United v. Zulte Waragem
After such a comfortable victory in the first leg this was always going to be a bit of a formality so I wondered if I should go or just watch it on the telly. Then, as luck would have it a mate of mine invited me to join the so-called prawn sandwich brigade for a night of hospitality and football.
Great, I'll give that a go!
Arriving nearly two hours prior to the match, shown into a lovely lounge, I realise that this is nothing like the old days! This is a five-star restaurant in ultra-plush surroundings. Lovely meal, several glasses of a particularly pleasing Sancerre and even the bonus of two puddings--sorry, desserts! So far, so good.
Now for the match, hoping that this, too, will be of the five-star variety. It was not to be. I had been hoping for a morale-boosting five goal romp but, instead, got a mere one-goal win.
Credit should be given to the part-timers from Belgium who "gave their lot" and really seemed to enjoy their day at the big boys' place. But we should be better than this winning by a solitary Martins strike in the second half and we shall have to be in a much better state of mind when we face A.Z.Alkmaar over two legs next month.
They proved that they have a bit of spirit coming back from two down against Fenerbache to get a draw and go through on away goals after the 3-3 draw in Turkey.
Ay, haway the lads; get yer socks rolled up, big boys next round!
