Well, it had to happen!!

Newcastle United 0 Bolton Wanderers 0

You would have to be a real sceptic to bet on a goalless draw on King Kev's return to The Toon, but that's the way it panned out. And you would have to be incredibly sceptical to bet on Newcastle having no shots on target, but that, too, is the way it panned out!

Even allowing for this it was still so much better all-round which doesn't say a lot for the previous regime!

Excuses could prevail with no fewer than nine players unavailable due to injury, suspension, African Nations and a fight outside McDonalds but that is not Kev's way so he praised Bolton for their organisation and resilience and went away to ponder over what really lies ahead and the difficulties that have to be overcome.

Bolton did come to spoil the party and succeeded although they did push forward on occasions in the first half but sat back and defended deep in the second basically inviting the home side to work their way past them. To this end, theirs was huff and puff but not someone with that little bit extra to create that one goal that would surely win the match.

Amazingly it was Bolton who nearly won the game in the dying seconds when sub Samuel had the chance of the day but Given saved with his leg.

Not the start we had hoped for in Keegan's latest reign but things are looking up so, here we go, onwards and upwards!
