Winning On The Home Front
14 February 2008
Sunderland 2 Wigan 0
Their away record may leave a lot to be desired but, if they can continue picking up home points, particularly against their rivals in the bottom half of the table, then survival looks to be on.
Wigan will feel hard done by because they created enough chances to have beaten Sunderland for a third time this season but a mixture of bad luck, bad finishing and some desperate defending meant that, this time, thay would be leaving empty-handed. Wigan's defending would have to be severely questioned for Etuhu's opener because, whoever was supposed to be marking him, wasn't! He was left in acres of space to neatly head home from Whitehead's free-kick.
As Wigan powered forward in the second half an equaliser looked to be on the cards but, as happens so often, the team under the cosh, namely Sunderland broke away and netted a second to take the pressure off. And what a goal it was! Daryl Murphy drifted in from the right on to his favoured left and hit an absolute peach in off the bar.
Another three home points and whisper it, only two points behind Newcastle!!
