Arngrove Northern League

Sunderland Nissan maintained their lead at the top after a hard-earned single goal victory at Dunston Fed, the goal coming from super-sub Gavin Cogden.

Whitley Bay kept the pressure on with a comfortable 3-0 win at Blue Star with two goals from Kerr and a third from Timmens. They stay three points behind Nissan but with two games in hand they will be fancying their chances of overtaking the leaders before the end of the season.

The only other team currently in a realistic position to challenge for the title is Billingham Town and they featured in the game of the day. All looked lost when they were 3-1 down at home to an excellent West Auckland side but in an amazing last ten minutes, not only did they score through Huggins from the penalty spot but the ever dangerous Nathan Jamieson scored not once but twice to earn all three points for the Tees-siders.

At the "wrong end" of the table Bedlington Terriers moved off the bottom with a 2-0 win over Northallerton overtaking Darlington R.A. who were soundly beaten 3-0 by Newcastle Benfield.

The third bottom team, Horden C.W., now have four games in hand so will be looking to pick up a few points to create a bit of a gap between themselves and the bottom two.
