So near and yet.....

Billingham Synthonia 1 AFC Totton 2
(Agg. 3-3 Totton win 5-4 on penalties)

Having won 2-1 away in the first leg you could be forgiven for being very optimistic that Synners would be heading towards New Wembley for the final of the Vase but after a pulsating tie they went out dramatically after a penalty shoot-out.

It was never going to be easy and it was made all the more difficult when Osman headed home for the visitors as early as the third minute. In an end-to-end tie there were no further goals until the 80th minute when Stevens netted to put Totton ahead and surely Wembley bound. But that would be to reckon without the spirit of this Billingham side and Wells clipped the ball home to the absolute ecstasy of the home crowd.

So extra-time it was. And what a chance for the Synners who were awarded a penalty. But the hero Wells had his kick saved by McCormack, who in turn became the hero when he played a major part in the 5-4 penalty shoot-out win.

It has been a fantastic ride for Synners who were so near and yet so far from a historic trip to New Wembley.
