A New Hero?

Sunderland 2 Birmingham 0

As per Middlesbrough (and now Newcastle!) it is vital to win home games against fellow battlers at the bottom. and this is exactly what Sunderland did against a poor Birmingham side who now find themselves dicing with the bottom three.

But credit where it is due and Sunderland got what they deserved and continued their fairly decent home record which now takes them to the heady heights of 14th. New signing Bardsley looked accomplished defensively and it was from one of his long balls that the ever dangerous Jones nodded down amongst a rather static Brum rearguard for Murphy to half volley home.

The other new signing, Rade Prica, made his debut at half-time replacing Dwight Yorke and we could have a hero in the making if his first 45 minutes are anything to go by. He worried the opposing defence throughout and got his just reward when he showed a goalscorer's instinct to read a headed back pass from Ridgewell, beat the keeper to it and confidently flick the ball home.

The same player could have had a second but made a strange effort to finish and a dubious hand ball was given against him.

Roy Keane's delight at his performance was there for all to see and let's hope it continues at Anfield at the week-end!
