Brom sent West by happy Sunderland

West Brom 1 Sunderland 2

This was to be the major test for Sunderland. Three games against the top teams, Birmingham, Derby and West Brom. Seven points from these games is a fabulous return and Roy Keane's men now look to power on in their pursuit of Premiership football.

West Brom started well playing the sort of football that Tony Mowbray has been preaching but, not only did Sunderland weather the storm but broke away in the 24th minute and took the lead when the impressive Stern John set up Dwight Yorke to net confidently.

The Cats then settled down and were the better side for the remainder of the half and indeed increased their lead four minutes from the break through the head of that man John.

West Brom fought their way back into it in the second half and the pressure paid off when former Cat, Darren Carter, struck a neat shot into the corner of the net. This signalled frantic pressure from the home side but Sunderland showed the resiliance to cope and gain three great points.

The only disappointment was a shoulder injury to Carlos Edwards which means he could be missing over the next few games.
