It had to happen......
18 December 2007
Sunderland 1 Aston Villa 1
It looked like they had done it again--a winning goal deep into injury time.
The opposing keeper flaps at a corner, the ball hits the head of Collins and sails into the net. Three points against a very decent side in Aston Villa. But no.
For some inexplicable reason the ref, Steve Bennett decides that a foul has been committed and disallows it. I think we all feel that goalkeepers can be over-protected but this was molly-coddling!!
For the first time during his tenure at the club, Roy Keane decided that something had to be said and he put his point across in a very calm manner.
He will probably get into trouble with the F.A. but the fact remains that he is absolutely right--but, as ever, that will stand for nothing! It had all started so well with Higginbotham heading home a fine goal after only ten minutes from a lovely Wallace corner.
Aston Villa have so much pace in their side that they are always dangerous particularly on the counter but Sunderland more than held their own until the 73rd minute when little Maloney was fouled near the edge of the box.
He proved just why he is renowned for his free-kicks by slottin it beautifully into the corner. Ward, the home keeper, took the dreaded step to his left in tryinf to read the kicker's intentions and could not make any effort to save as it flew into the opposite corner.
A decent all-round display culminating in the disallowing of a perfectly good goal. Two points dropped is vital at this stage.
I wonder if Mr. Bennett realises this?
