Not Again.......
Reading 2 Sunderland 1
24 December 2007
When your luck is out then it most definitely is out! After last week's disallowed "goal" in the last minute against Villa surely Sunderland deserved a rub of the green. But it was not to be. O.K let's face the facts, Reading were the superior side and probably deserved to win the match but not in these circumstances.
The linesman (or should I say the referee's assistant!) confidently raised his flag to denote that Steve Hunt's effort had crossed the line but it was an impossible decision to make so he should have given the benefit of the doubt to the defending side.
Craig Gordon must wonder what is going on because in theory he has made a great stop to cap a fine performance. In the game itself Gordon did well and Reading hit the woodwork before the pressure finally told and Ingimarsson knocked the ball home after Gordon had pushed out an effort from Sonko.
But Sunderland withstood the continued pressure and Kenwyne Jones tempted Sonko to challenge him inside the box and he gave away a definite penalty which Chopra slotted home rather neatly.
So with a hard-fought draw on the cards it was so disappointing, to say the least, that the game is lost because of one man's dubious decision.
I don't think Mr Rubey will be getting a Christmas card from Mr Keane!!
