Staying Up......
Sunderland 3 Middlesbrough 2
28 April 2008
It has been a long, hard season but the grit and determination in the Sunderland squad has been enough to guarantee safety which, let's be honest, was the first priority at the start of the season following promotion (against all the odds!!) last term.
It didn't start too well, though, going a goal down in the first five minutes when Tuncay was sent clear and confidently slotted home. However, any would-be nerves were settled almost immediately when Higginbotham got on the end of a cross to send a fine header past the stranded Jones.
It looked like it would be all square at the interval but that was reckoning without Michael Chopra who showed neat control in the box to evade Wheater and sent a lovely left-pegger high into the net. Advantage Sunderland!
"Boro battled to get back into the game and were rewarded when big signing Alves latched on to the ball in the box and scambled it home.
One thing for the homesters, they play till the death and, as per Chopra in the first half, another last minute goal evolved when Murphy made a strong run towards the near post to meet a corner and headed powerfully in off the underside of the bar.
Safety for sure and ecstasy all round the ground.
So 'Boro have to battle on to ensure their status and now Roy Keane can get his thoughts on who he can bring in to continue the improvement within the club next season.
