Sunderland 2 Reading 1

I really feel that the majority of players who moved towards the end of the transfer window were way over-priced and, into this category I placed Kenwyne Jones,£6m signing from Southampton. I could be wrong, I could be very wrong!!

He is a massive young lad and brought so much physical presence to the team which up till now had been lacking. He scored the opening goal into the bargain and, with a touch of luck, could have had at least one more. He also had a hand in the second, scored early in the second half by Ross Wallace.

Although Kitson got one back for Reading five minutes from the end it would have been an injustice if they had got anything from a game where Sunderland were always superior. So many teams find the second season after promotion so difficult. Could Reading fall into this category?

At the start of any season you look through the fixtures and you have to consider that getting a point or points from games against some of the "big boys" is a bit of a bonus whereas other games, like Reading at home, are matches you are looking to win.

A win it was and a win achieved in good style. What price the confidence to be soaring at The Riverside next week in the big derby?
