Chelsea 2 Sunderland 0
Having lost seven at Everton it was always going to be difficult in deciding how to plot the match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. As it turned out the home side was vastly superior and it appeared that they were quite happy just to do enough to win.
Chelsea did hit the woodwork twice and had a few near misses but in the end the result was a "respectable" 2-0.
With Drogba out for a spell, Shevchenko started the match aiming to keep his starting place in the near future and did his chances no harm at all when he headed a simple goal after good work by Kalou.
Sunderland worked hard enough but looked like a team who really did not believe that they could win this match so it was no surprise when Lampard hit the clincher from the penalty spot after Higginbotham was adjudged to have tugged at the Brazilian Alex.
To cap a sad day for the visitors Liam Miller lifted his hands and left the ref with no alternative but to send him off.
The massive gap between top and bottom in The Premier League was here for all to see and simply emphasises that teams in the lower reaches have to win their home games and get away draws against teams in similar positions.
