A Point Gained?

Sunderland 2 Stoke City 2
On a tremendous undefeated run, it was going to be a run-of-the-mill home win with promotion beckoning. Wrong! This would be disrespectful to a very talented and lively Stoke City side who still have their sights set on the play-off places.
Sunderland had a bad night and Stoke held the upper hand for the most part.
They started off brightly and could have gone ahead on a couple of occasions before a speculative attempt by Russell was somehow spilled by Darren Ward and the ball crept over the line much to the dismay of the disconsolate 'keeper.
However things improved almost immediately when a right wing cross was neatly laid into the path of Dean Whitehead by Connolly and he cracked home a fine equaliser.
However it was still the visitors who were causing most problems and deep into first half injury time they took the lead again with a fine Hoefkens strike.
Whilst Sunderland huffed and puffed in the second period, it was still Stoke who had the confidence and indeed looked fairly comfortable. However, right on the final whistle, Daryl Murphy hit a lovely volley past Simonsen to gain a last-gap point.
This could be classed as two points dropped but, in reality, it is a point gained, a point that could be vital when the end of season totting up takes place.
