Sunderland Find it Hard Going!
28 August 2007
Sunderland 0 Liverpool 2
If ever proof was needed that it could be a long, hard battle in The Premier League, today was the day to prove it.
There are no easy games in this league but some are even harder than others! Today's game was a point in case against a Liverpool side that many are tipping to go close to actually winning the league following the acquisitions brought in by Rafa Benitez.
Although it took Liverpool until three minutes from time to seal the game with a finish from the impressive Voronin, it was Scottish keeper Craig Gordon who kept Sunderland in the hunt with some great stops culminating in a magnificent save from the aforementioned Voronin.
Fernando Torres, the biggest money signing of all, showed his worth throughout the match as he teased and tormented the Sunderland rearguard.
However the opening goal came from a strange source, namely Momo Sissoko, with his first goal for Liverpool. He has never impressed me as a top Premier League midfielder but he did strike Voronin's lay-off beautifully into the corner of the net with even Gordon having no chance of stopping it.
Roy Kean's record has been magnificent at The Stadium of Light to the point that optimism actually overtook the reality of the situation, the reality being that if Sunderland stay up it will be a fine achievement by all concerned.
