Sunderland hit the Skids

Colchester 3 Sunderland 1

Well it had to happen eventually. It had been a magnificent unbeaten run of 17 matches but I wonder how many of us thought that it would end against little Colchester in their very compact little ground. Mind you, let's not forget just how well Colchester have done. Following this victory they find themselves only one point off the play-off places and in a fine vein of form particularly at home. Could we possibly see both these teams in The Premiership next season!?!

The first half was a hard fought affair which looked like ending goalless. That is until the ref decide to play some five minutes extra time as against the three displayed by the fourth official. Wayne Brown made his way forward for a Watson free-kick and timed his run and jump perfectly to head strongly home.

As we had hoped Sunderland came out after the break ready to fight for their lives and they pounded the Colchester goal until the equaliser arrived after ten minutes. Gerkin made va terrific save from Leadbitter but was unable to recover in time to prevent Dwight Yorke nodding home from Murphy's quick delivery into the 6 yard box.

Sunderland maintained the momentum and had a couple of good chances to score but full credit to Colchester who hung in there and had their own ideas about who could win this game.

With only 8 minutes remaining Garcia showed some splendid footwork to turn and slot the ball home and then in the last minute local hero Jamie Cureton was pulled down by Whitehead and he got up to score from the penalty spot to give three points to the homesters.

Hopefully this is but a blip for us and it is still in our own hands. Two wins in the last two games and The Premiership awaits!
