S (W) underland!

Sunderland 2 Q.P.R. 1

With both Newcastle and Middlesbrough struggling yet again it was left to Sunderland to show the way. Not only did they overcome a dogged Q.P.R. but, in the process, moved to the top of the table with just a glimmer of daylight between them and the rest of the pack.

Yet another manager, this time John Gregory, says that they are definites for The Premiership. But there is one manager who you will not hear saying this......one Mr Roy Keane!---At least not until it is absolutely, totally "in the bag".

Sunderland was always the likelier side but the visitors made them fight every inch of the way even after going a goal down very early in the game when Connolly played the ball in to Whitehead who held off a challenge to slot home. However, instead of going on to score the vital second it was Q.P.R. who got the next goal through Rowlands from the penalty spot after Blackstock had been felled by Ward.

This perked the home side up and there were several chances which just lacked the finishing touch until super-sub Grant Leadbitter joined the fray. Having come on and scored a wonder goal in the victory at Southampton he did it again in the 76th minute to secure yet another three points for the rampant Wearsiders.

Seventeen games without defeat, three games to go, surely, oh surely.............
