Bloody referees!!
22 October 2007
I was at the derby match in Liverpool at the week-end. It is a very special day and you can literally smell the tension!
I went to a dinner the evening before to do a bit of a Q & A with some of the great Everton number nines--Dave Hickson, Joe Royle, Andy Gray, Graeme Sharp--and had a great time.
Most of the questions were naturally about the derby match. So, back to the match. At the risk of sounding slightly biased, how could the referee :-
1. Change his mind and put away a yellow card and bring out a red to send off Hibbert, after a bit of prompting from Gerrard?
2. Not send Kuyt off after a two-footed kung-fu type lunge that would have decapitated Neville if he had not just got out of the way?
3. And the most amazing of all. How could he not give a penalty when Carragher basically committed assault on Lescott in the very last second?
I try hard not to over criticise referees because it is not an easy job but, in this instance, there are just too many dodgy points to just let it lie. I await the F.A.'s views with great interest.
