Policeman's Ball

Every year I compere a Sportsmen's Dinner at St James' Park for the local police.

They put a lot of work in and donate a large sum to the children's cancer ward at the R.V.I.

Dave Bassett was the speaker and I have been at the races with him several times and he is a right good lad. He obviously has plenty to talk about having amazingly taken Wimbledon all the way from obscurity to a third place finish in The Premier League! Naturally Vinny Jones got a mention or twelve!

I am delighted to say that his after-dinner speech was much better than his tips at the races!!

The comedian was a scouser who I had never met before called Gary Skyner. He is the U.K.'s second Thalidomide victim and he has an astounding history. He learned to fly, passed his advanced driving course, became a grade one referee, got a law degree, etc, etc. All round smart arse if you ask me!!

I introduced him by saying that when I first met him I thought he was a Jock. Short arms, long pockets, which he took in good style--and then proceeded to "slaughter" me once he got the mike in his hands!

What a funny man and an inspiration to us all.
